Nature Connectedness for Recovery from Substance Use Disorder

The therapeutic benefits that outdoor activities provide have been scientifically documented. An NIH report, “Recovery Horizons: Nature-Based Activities as Adjunctive Treatments for Co-Occurring Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Use Disorders” indicates that even a one-hour walk in nature can have positive effects on stress-related brain regions. “For those with SUDs, a one-hour walk has been shown to help reduce cravings, offering a simple and accessible starting point for patients.”

The NIH report further shares, one of the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of nature-based activities is mindfulness. “Mindfulness can be defined as increased awareness of one’s surroundings, emotions, thoughts, and bodily sensations in the present moment without judgment. Natural environments may enhance mindfulness by increasing sensory engagement and promoting calm.” Biopsychosocial mechanisms have also been suggested for the role of exercise in the treatment of SUDs.

The formation of exercise habits can often function as a replacement for habitual substance use by, “engaging the dopaminergic neural pathway of “craving-driving-behavior-reward” and facilitating the recovery of the dopamine system after chronic drug use.”
